What Is an Advance?

One of the most, if not the most, important aspect of a protective security operation. The advance phase will answer a series of questions relevant to the venues a client will be visiting, the most important one being, is it safe where the client is going? This can be considered the risk management portion of the operation and will assist in the identification of medical centers, safe havens, heliports, airports, embassies, and other pertinent locations in relation to the venues to be visited. An advance survey can range from a series of questions to many pages of information. There are also times when a full security detail is not warranted or desired, but an advance survey is the most logical service — paired with a few key logistical coordinations, it can provide meaningful risk mitigation on its own. Additionally, pairing an advance survey with an intelligence product is tremendously beneficial — providing your team with layered situational awareness that combines on-the-ground assessments with deeper analytical insight into the threat landscape, local conditions, and emerging risks. It is highly recommended that an advance survey always be conducted in anticipation of a client's arrival to any venue and an Advance Specialist be present upon his/her arrival.
